TikTok Is Quietly Putting Web Apps Inside Its App

TikTok is already where millions of people go to watch videos. But buried inside its developer documentation is something considerably more interesting for web designers:

TikTok has built a framework that lets web-based experiences run inside TikTok itself. They’re called TikTok Minis, and the interesting part isn’t really the technology behind them. It’s what TikTok appears to be doing with the web.

Wait, TikTok has apps inside TikTok?

Sort of. TikTok describes Minis as third-party experiences that can run directly inside TikTok. Its current documentation is particularly focused on Mini Dramas, where people can watch short dramas from outside services without jumping into another app or browser.

Underneath all of that is something web designers will recognize. According to TikTok’s technical overview, these experiences can use familiar web technology, including HTML, JavaScript, React and Vue. You don’t need to understand the technical details to see why that’s interesting.

In very simple terms, instead of:

TikTok → link → browser → website

you can have something closer to:

TikTok → interactive experience → still TikTok

That sounds like a relatively small change, but it could end up being an important one.

The web isn’t disappearing. It’s being swallowed by apps.

Social platforms have spent years trying to stop us from leaving. Instagram wants you looking at Instagram, TikTok wants you watching TikTok, and YouTube would very much prefer that your next click leads to another YouTube video. TikTok Minis takes that idea another step: why send someone to a website at all if part of that experience can simply happen inside TikTok?

For web designers, that means TikTok could eventually represent more than vertical videos, thumbnails and social content. Within the kinds of Minis TikTok currently supports, developers can build actual interactive experiences that live inside the platform. Suddenly the distinction between a website, social network and app gets surprisingly blurry.

And that may be the more interesting story here.

There is a catch

Don’t rebuild your portfolio inside TikTok just yet. TikTok Minis isn’t currently an open alternative to the App Store or the wider web. TikTok’s development documentation is heavily focused on Mini Dramas, and developers still have to operate within TikTok’s platform, configuration and approval processes.

There’s another wrinkle: TikTok isn’t moving everything toward web technology. Its Mini Games are actually going in the opposite direction. TikTok stopped accepting or supporting HTML-based Mini Games on August 28, 2026, and is moving games to its native runtime.

So the story isn’t that TikTok is suddenly turning everything into websites. It’s that TikTok has created a way for certain interactive experiences that might once have sent you elsewhere on the web to exist directly inside TikTok instead. That’s a subtler change, but potentially a much more interesting one.

Why web designers should care

For most of the web’s history, designers created destinations. People clicked a Google result, followed a link or typed an address and arrived at a website. But that model has been changing for years: content lives on Instagram, video lives on TikTok, conversations happen on Reddit, and increasingly people can shop, watch and interact without ever opening a traditional website.

TikTok Minis is another step in that direction. It gives developers another place to build interactive experiences, but this time the experience can live inside someone else’s platform. For designers, that’s interesting — and perhaps a little uncomfortable — because the web isn’t necessarily disappearing. It’s increasingly showing up in places we don’t think of as the web.

The browser used to be where the web lived. Increasingly, it may just be one of the places where we find it.
